INCREASING POTENTIAL TO TRANSFORM AND ENRICHEN LIVES

Crossroads Fund recognizes the important role grassroots organizations play in movements for social, racial, and economic justice. In partnership with Woods Fund Chicago, the Capacity Building Initiative (CBI) provides high-quality, technical assistance to grantees so that their work towards social change aligns with their values and continues to build on a strong foundation.

Program Details

WHAT IS THE CAPACITY BUILDING INITIATIVE?

The Capacity Building Initiative (CBI) is a year-long program where a cohort of grantees

  1. Receive individualized support from a highly qualified consultant
  2. Engage in workshops and peer to peer learning sessions on specific capacity building topics
  3. Receive additional grants based on availability.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The cohort of organizations selected to CBI are awarded an initial grant to work with a roster of consultants. Organizations then complete an organizational assessment which will inform their work plan for the grant period.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

Work plans can include capacity building goals such as:

  • Organizational development with board or staff leadership
  • Shifting organizational culture and practices in decision making, evaluation, operations
  • Creating a board recruitment and leadership development plan
  • Facilitating a strategic planning process with organization stakeholders
  • Strengthening financial management systems
  • Developing a robust fundraising plan
  • Building organizational skills in technology hardware or software
  • Expanding the organization’s reach and impact with a communications plan

Organizations selected to CBI will also participate in workshops facilitated by a team of consultants. Past topics included:

  • Board Development
  • Fundraising 101
  • Financial Management 101
  • Healing Justice
  • Human Resource Practices
  • Engaging Directly Impacted People

WHAT IS THE COMMITTMENT?

The program participants selected must commit to:

  • Up to 40 hours for work plan development and implementation
  • p to 6 hours for workshops and peer to peer learning sessions

WHO CAN APPLY?

Criteria:

  • Applicants and/or their fiscal sponsor must be nonprofit organizations with current 501(c)(3) status.
  • Applicants must be a current grantee of either Crossroads Fund and/or Woods Fund.
  • Applicants must have an annual budget of less than $500,000.
  • Applicants must commit to actively participating in CBI which includes up to 40 hours for work plan development and implementation and up to 6 hours for workshops and peer to peer learning sessions.
