Our Organizing Will Free Us

Amid a global pandemic and the spring uprisings for racial justice throughout the world, we see the power of grassroots organizing to dismantle the systems that harm Indigenous, Black, Brown, Trans, Disabled, and poor communities. This movement moment does not allow for us to be neutral or to be bystanders. It calls for all of us to respond with urgency and conviction that the moment for transformation is now.

Crossroads Fund is an integral part of movement building for racial, social, and economic justice. We develop deep relationships with grassroots organizations at the front lines and organize donors to pool their resources together to fund a multitude of initiatives. We believe the fights we are winning today bring us closer to the world we deserve.

As a movement funder, we are supporting grantees at the frontline of both pandemics - COVID-19 and racism - in the following ways:

  • The Critical Response Fund which, between mid-March and June, moved over $124,000 to 34 organizations responding to the pandemics with mutual aid and solidarity actions.
  • The Giving Project through which we continue to bring together Chicagoans across identities to dig deep into issues of race, class, and power. The 2020 Giving Project cohort raised $170,000 by organizing over 350 donors.
  • As a public foundation, Crossroads Fund can host funders collaboratives and pooled funds that allow for collective and timely grantmaking. This spring, we hosted the Technology Funders Collaborative, which granted out $190,007 to assist 30 organizations with technology improvements necessary due to COVID-19.
  • We partnered with our colleagues at Woods Fund Chicago, Field Foundation of Illinois, and Conant Family Foundation to host weekly teach-ins for the philanthropic sector to invest in abolitionist futures and divest from harmful institutions.

“When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st Century, let them say that it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression and war. So I say to you, walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of peace and the power of everlasting love be your guide.”  - U.S. Rep John Lewis

Our mandate is to resource movements like we want them to win! We can’t do that without you! Over 70% of our fundraising comes from individual donations: people like you who want to support movements now and who believe in a future of collective liberation.
