Crossroads Fund gave the Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty its first foundation grant to work for a moratorium on executions, and supported us at a time when no one else was willing to fund the issue. – Jane Bohman, Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.
The US leads the world in the number of people in prison. Everyday new evidence comes to light proving the innocence of individuals on death row. Zero tolerance policies are funneling youth from schools to prisons at alarming rates. And Chicago is still grappling with a history of police torture and corruption.
Crossroads Fund funds groups working on every aspect of the criminal justice system, from organizing for the human rights of prisoners, fighting for police accountability and an end to police brutality, advocating for the rights of ex-offenders, and building restorative justice programs that provide an alternative to incarceration for our city’s youth.
Crossroads Fund grantees have won historic victories, including the abolition of the death penalty in the state of Illinois, and the successful prosecution of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge.
